Absolute Truth

As New York legalizes late-term abortions, the internet is buzzing with comments. I had the opportunity to review a heated discussion between a Pro-life proponent and an abortion advocate. And maybe the labels are wrong. Maybe, to be more accurate, this was a discussion between a Christian and an atheist about the value of life. The Christian argued that propositional truths have no moral basis and are subject to emotions and personal thoughts. He pointed out that there is no room for propositional truth when you decide to accept God's Word as fact. The atheist argued that God's Word has no value, was subject to interpretation, and since God does not exist, the Word is powerless. As the atheist quickly began to lose this intellectual argument, she turned to personal attacks and left her argument to die.
Here is the reality of Absolute Truth and propositional truth.
Outside of Absolute Truth (I capitalize this for a reason), all decisions are subject to the whims of the individual. We have no baseline, no ground zero, no rule to apply to our decisions, we begin to make decisions based on self-righteous, personal morals (or lack of morals) based on our life experiences (whether good or bad, whether chaos or peaceful resolutions). The argument is, "I support this decision because, what if. . ." These decisions will nearly always lead to false conclusions. A person who lives like this has no moral compass. Without a compass, how will one arrive at a safe destination?
God's Word is Absolute Truth. Whether accepted or not, believed or not, acted upon or rejected, it will always remain Absolute Truth. It is not a book about Jesus. It is Jesus.
John1:1-5 & 14
In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
The same was in the beginning with God.
All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. . .
And the Word was made flesh,
and dwelt among us,
(and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,)
full of grace and truth."
He is Absolute Truth. He is the Word.
Many have denied Jesus and in denying Him have denied Absolute Truth. Denying Him doesn't make Him non-existent. Denying the Word doesn't make it not the truth. Denying the Word won't change the truth, and it won't change God. But at the moment a person denies Him, that same Word becomes a stumbling block.
1 Peter 2:6-8 NIV
For in Scripture it says:
“See, I lay a stone in Zion,
a chosen and precious cornerstone,
and the one who trusts in him
will never be put to shame.”
Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe,
“The stone the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone,”and,
“A stone that causes people to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall.”
They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for.
We can either chose to believe that God has provided Absolute Truth in His Word, or we can choose to not believe and be put to shame. We can either build the foundations of our lives on the Rock, or we can stumble upon that same Rock. But that Rock will never be moved, and neither will the one who builds his foundations on that Rock.
Matthew 7:24-27 Jesus said
"Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock:
and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.
“But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand:
and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.”
Here is the conclusion. And there is an irony here. That irony is that everything stated here can only be understood by those who have accepted Absolute Truth. So my Christian brother who debated with the Atheist made no difference in her life. But the conclusion that we know, as Christians, is this: when we allow ourselves to make decisions in our lives based on subjective experiences, emotions, and personal thoughts, we are headed to an unhappy resolution. But when we allow God's Word to be the Absolute Truth and the moral compass for our decisions, we are never put to shame. God is God, and His Word is Absolute.
